The West Party visited RAAF Base Point Cook with local historian Lisa Heinrichs to better understand the significance of this remarkable site and the role it continues to play in our region.
RAAF Base Point Cook is not just a piece of land – it is the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force. For generations, it has stood as a symbol of service, innovation and pride for communities across Melbourne’s west.
Some small parts of the base are heritage listed. But a lot of the base isn’t and now, the cash-strapped Federal Government wants to sell off those parts of the base to developers. Lisa shared valuable insights into why protecting sites like this matters for future generations.
Places like Point Cook tell the story of who we are, where we’ve come from and the people who helped shape our country. And as our region continues to grow, it is important that decisions about land use are made carefully and responsibly. Melbourne’s west is already facing shocking pressure on infrastructure, services and open spaces.
We cant allow the base to be turned into housing, especially when the infrastructure for those houses is nowhere to be seen.
